Ash Wednesday - The Rev. Canon Deborah Noonan, Assistant to the Dean of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Phoenix and Cathedral Member Cliff Golden, Thurifer, offered ASHES TO GO at ASU Downtown today.

More than 100 received Imposition of Ashes.  Debbie+ ran out of brochures and many questions were asked.  Here is the brochure.

ASHES TO GO was very well received!

Why do we pray? The short answer is because the bell rings to tell us its time for prayer. Living busy lives in the world we don't have the support of the ordered daily routine of a monastic community. Yet, participation in the Common Prayer of the Church is a practice that our Anglican Tradition strongly encourages. Using the Daily Office is a way of praying that links us to all the other Christians who are likewise using this form of prayer. We literally plug ourselves into the prayer that is unceasing.  Using this form of prayer also frees us from the tyranny of our moods. We don't need to feel like doing it or feel particularly close to God or imaginative in the given moment. The structure supports us and connects us to that great cloud of witnesses that constantly surrounds us.

For many of us living busy lives its impractical to carry around a Book of Common Prayer and Bible with us. Therefore, for those of us who work from our desktops and are on the go with smart phone supports the following links will help you to support a regular pattern of daily prayer that fits the structure and demands of your day. Take a look at the following links:

“The Lenten Walk- Body, Mind and Spirit”- Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:00pm. We’ll meet on the Labyrinth by the outdoor pulpit. Bring a journal or sketch tablet, if you like to write or doodle your thoughts. You are also invited to bring your lunch, and eat outside on the benches or in Atwood Hall after walking the Labyrinth. Come once, twice or every time as you are able. Guided by Archdeacon Veronica Ritson and Canon Debbie Noonan.

Changes to Sunday Evensong in Lent - We are trialing some changes to the format for Evensong during Lent. We will review the changes after Easter. Evensong will be moved into the Choir to foster more of a sense of connection and atmosphere as is the case when we do this at the Thursday evening Eucharist. The order will remain Evening Prayer Rite I but we will do away with the two hymns. The setting will still be sung using the plainsong setting in the hymnal. The more formal teaching sermon will give way to more of a time for reflection. Canon Mark will present a series of talks on the Rule of Benedict and one of the two lessons will be taken from the Rule or a commentary on the Rule. There will then be space for others to make responses in the Quaker style of speak when the spirit moves.

NOTES FOR ROBES! - Trinity Cathedral's choir vestments are over 20 years old, shop worn and bedraggled. Please help us raise funds to purchase new robes for our beloved Trinity Cathedral and its choir!

An anonymous donor has most generously donated half the total required. Our goal is now $3500. See the poster in the Olney Room and pick a note to buy toward the purchase of the new robes.

Our organist and choirmaster Erik Goldstrom will compose a tune, song, hymn or maybe an anthem from the purchased notes and it will be performed on the vestment dedication Sunday!

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Save the dates! - The Dean will lead a Lenten Book Study on five Wednesdays starting February 29 at 6pm. A sign-up sheet for the book study and meal preparation is available to the Front Desk in the Olney Room.

Nametags - We encourage everyone at the Cathedral to remember to wear your nametag each Sunday when you arrive for church. This allows newcomers to learn names more quickly, and makes introductions a little easier for everybody. If you do not have a nametag (or you’ve lost yours), sign up to order a new one at the Hospitality Desk. We ask everyone to make a donation of $7 per nametag to cover costs. (Write “nametag” on the memo line of your check or offering envelope gift.)

Help rebuild Cathedral in Haiti

At Diocesan Convention, you may have heard about a Lenten appeal to join with the rest of The Episcopal Church in rebuilding the cathedral in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. I hope you will read the attached flyer and join with our diocese in this important effort. Together, we can rebuild the cathedral and renew hope for Haiti, one brick at a time. It would be wonderful and inspiring to have some contribution from every church and worshipping community in the diocese.

Blessings,

The Rev Poulson C. Reed (Diocesan Contact)

Rector

All Saints' Episcopal Church and Day School
